BOOOO, Bliss.

Good Or Nah?

How many times have I extolled the virtues of Bliss Body Butter here? SO MANY TIMES. Listen y’all, I started getting their spa catalogs in the mid 90s, and was like “lol, thirty bucks for lotion.” And then I bought one on a lark and hooooly crap it was SO GOOD. Sometimes I’d get lucky and find it on sale (TJMaxx, ilu) but even when I didn’t? Worth it. Ultra rich, ultra hydrating, the perfect cure for dry feet and elbows, but never heavy or greasy-feeling. The only downside was the price tag.

And thus my delight was LARGE AND EXUBERANT when I saw the same 6.7oz tube (albeit with a redesigned look) for ten bucks on Target’s site! Wait, how can that be? I had Suspicions, but Target’s website is always low on relevant information, so I trekked over to, where recent reviews (and a current ingredients list) indicated that my HG had indeed been not just repackaged and repriced, but also reformulated. Nooooooooo. :(

OG Bliss on the top, new version on the bottom. Same upright tube, same flip-top cap, same(ish) aqua and yellow look. The ingredients do have a lot of commonalities, and yet ….

OG Bliss Ingredients : Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Isopropyl Myristate, Cetyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Stearate, Trimethylolpropane Triisostearate, Sorbitan Tristearate, Phenoxyethanol, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Butylene Glycol, Triethanolamine, Caprylyl Glycol, Algae Extract, Tetrasodium EDTA, Carbomer, Ethyl Acetate, Cyclohexane, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Calluna Vulgaris Extract, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citral, Limonene.

New Version Ingredients : Water (Aqua) (Eau), Isopropyl Myristate, Stearic Acid, Dimethicone, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cetyl Alcohol, Trimethylolpropane Triisostearate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax (Candelilla Cera) (Cire de candelilla), Glycerin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Butylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, PEG-40 Stearate, Sorbitan Tristearate, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Potassium Benzoate, Sodium Hydroxide, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Citric Acid, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Calluna Vulgaris Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Fragrance (Parfum)

Super-nice coconut oil, soybean oil, and shea butter used to be the top ingredients — now they’re bumped down the list behind isopropyl myristate (a fatty alcohol of myristic acid), stearic acid, and dimethicone. You’d think that this shift would yield a significant change in the product’s feel/texture/efficacy, and YOU WOULD BE RIGHT.

The OG Body Butter formula (above) is thick, lush, and, well, buttery. It’s smooooooth, and a little goes a LONG way. Like, the amount of product I’d use for good coverage in other [lesser] lotions? About half that is perfect.

The new formula is more … fluffy – watery – gelatinous? It’s hard to describe, but it feels more gel-like, and once you start rubbing it in, it definitely feels more liquidy and less emollient. It seems to have a higher water (or stuff that feels like water) content, and is way, way “lighter.” The texture is what I image would be the result if you took some of the OG Bliss and combined it with a cheapo watery lotion and whipped them together to incorporate some air and thus provide the “body” and apparent thickness that should come from rich hefty oils. Sigh.

OG on the left, new on the right. The original spreads like, well …. again, like butter. The new version kinda collapses when you rub it around? It feels a little more watery-gel-like where the OG feels creamy-emollient.

Okay I seriously tried to get past my initial irritation and judge it on its own merits. The feel of this stuff is much more similar to Mrs Meyer’s lotion than to what I consider a legit “body butter,” so I spent a few days using the Mrs Meyer’s on my left arm/leg/foot/etc and the New Bliss on my right. And you know … I felt like the Mrs Meyer’s actually did a better job, and/or had more effective emollients in it (as opposed to just “moisture”). They’re VERY comparable — relatively light weight, non-greasy, more like a hydrator. And for warm weather, when you’re more likely to get sweaty and want to avoid your legs going *squip* and slipping around when you cross them? That’s fine! But it is not, by my reckoning, “body butter.” :( Anyway, a few hours after application, the New Bliss leg usually felt sliiiiightly drier and less moisturized/emollient-ified than the Mrs Meyer’s leg. Not the most rigorous scientific shiz goin’ on there, I admit, but anecdotal evidence counts for something, right?

THE VERDICT : MEH. I mean, if you lurrrrve one of the scents, and prefer a lighter moisturizer? It’s fine. It’s about $12 on Bliss’ own site and on Ulta, or $9.99 at Target. Do you need it? Probably not. I’ve been using both the new Bliss and the Mrs Meyer’s for the last two weeks, and I kinda prefer the Mrs Meyer’s — plus it’s about five bucks for 12oz instead of $10-12 for 6.7oz of New Bliss (and they both require about the same amount of product to get similar results), and the basil scent is SO nice. If you’re after a true heavy-duty body butter, or at least something significantly richer than this new formula? You can still find the OG version around! Kohl’s apparently has it for $14.50 right now (the product image shows the old version, as do the listed ingredients), or you might have luck at TJMaxx or on eBay or whatever. Failing that, The Body Shop’s Body Butter is alllllmost as rich and nice as the OG Bliss, and it’s easy to find (their own site, their stores, Ulta, etc, etc). It does come in an annoying jar rather than a tube or pump, but it’s also less expensive than OG Bliss (plus they frequently have sales and BOGOs) and it comes in an absolute truckload of different scents (I’m partial to the Fuji Green Tea). But still? Boooooo, Bliss.

TRIED THIS “NEW” STUFF? Dig it or nah? As pissed at Bliss as I am? DISCUSS.
